Experience Andis

The First Andis Dinner

The genesis of Andis wines was this dinner in the Winter of 2008. As fate would have it that night Mark and Heather were seated with Andy and Janis. What began as a discussion of regional California wine styles grew into feeling that it might be fun to collaborate on “some sort of wine project.” Over the next two years that idea took many forms, finally culminating in the plan to build the new Andis Wines winery.
Fresh Crushed Grapes

From the beginning, the focus was and has remained, on the wine. Even before it was decided to build a winery, even before Andis had a name, we began making wine. The process of winemaking is slow, so by starting immediately we were able to begin defining and refining the Andis style. Our vision is wine with balance, character, and complexity.
Vineyards, vineyards

Since Andis began with no building and no vineyards there were no restrictions to what we could do. We began by approaching some of Mark’s favorite growers and buying small lots from their best blocks. This approach allowed us to achieve both quality and diversity. And it meant we tromped all over the Foothills to find them.
Heather and Calvin Sampling

At Andis, everybody gets in on the action. Born to Heather and Mark in April 2009, Calvin was enthusiastically accompanying his mom on her field sampling trips by August.
Our first home

Once we had grapes we needed a place to make wine. Mark had worked with Bray Vineyards on a number of projects over the years and we found a great winemaking partnership with them. Under Mark’s guidance we “custom crushed” our first two vintages at Bray. Not only was it a great place to make wine, it allowed us an opportunity to start becoming part of the Amador wine community. Here, the Assistant Winemaker Joel Medina, ready for inclement weather, is on the go as usual.
Visioning

Very early on we developed a partnership with Pam Whitehead and Paul Almond of Sage Architecture. Here is a early conceptual drawing by Sage of one of the ideas for Andis. Notice that at the time we were still considering Archway Cellars as our name. The eventual name, Andis Wines, was not settled on until several months after this.
Finding Our Place

Once it was decided to build the winery, we faced possibly the most important decision of the process – where? It was a difficult process, until the day we came upon this piece, and then it was obvious. The winery now sits on the top of this hill and those rocks can be seen at our front entrance.
Groundbreaking

After weeks of rain delays we finally broke ground at Andis on May 4 of 2010. That gave us 4 months from groundbreaking to harvest, a tight schedule to say the least.
Wrapping it up

Along with the grapes, the wine, the name and the building we were also developing the label. Here is the first proof, hot off the presses. Because the label is so often the first introduction to a wine, we worked to create something that matched the spirit of the wine. Graceful and distinctive, with clean lines and a unique textured paper, we think it makes a great calling card for Andis.
A room with a View

By late July it was starting to come together. The framed area to the right is the Tasting Room. With 270 degree views, we think it is one of the prettiest places around to enjoy a great glass of wine. The Barrel Room is the middle section, with the Crush Pad and Fermentation areas to the left. Several big architectural surprises to come...
Andis

After all of that, we are still just at the beginning of what promises to be the adventure of a lifetime. We are quite proud of how far we have come so quickly and even more excited about where we are going.

We have had an amazing time getting these bottles full. It is our great hope you have a wonderful time getting them empty. Cheers.
