Join us for an artist reception and opening featuring the talented Cathleen Burglund!

A native San Franciscan, now residing in Sutter Creek, Cathleen paints and draws exactly what she sees: cats on her bed, chickens in her garden, old buildings on Main Street, friends at dinner, or the majesty of nearby mountains. 

She says that she’d rather draw than eat, and that’s how it has been for most of her life.  She studied art a long time ago, primarily with Maurice Lapp in Sonoma County.  Her work was first exhibited in Sonoma and Mendocino County galleries sixty years ago. She has since been featured in juried shows and galleries from here to Minnesota.

She and her husband operated their gallery, The Private Eye, on Orcas Island in Washington state for the years they lived there.

She has awarded herself an unofficial equivalent of a master’s degree in color, balance, and composition, allowing her to make her own rules and to break them, at will.  Her work has been called quirky, hard-edged, sentimental, primitive, rustic and sweet.  Humor abounds in her work, and her subjects are always sensitive and evocative. Every painting begins as a drawing: a sketchbook and pen are always close by.
