Orange wine is a type of wine made from white wine grapes where the grape skins, which contain color pigment and phenols, stay in contact with the juice for several days or even months. This contrasts with conventional white wine production where grape skins are quickly removed from the juice after crushing. The extended skin contact gives the wine its orange color, unique flavor and texture.
Our first attempt at Orange wine is made with Viognier grapes and was aged nearly 12 months in neutral oak barrels. The wine showcases a gorgeous amber color with aromas of wild prairie flowers and perfume. It smells sweet but is dry on the palate with flavors of vintage orange candy and mandarin.
Pair with melted brie topped with walnuts and honey, manchego, or other hard sheep cheeses. Serve slightly chilled.
